SS14: Heartbreak for Evans, joy for Neuville

31/03/2019

After three days of completely crazy racing, the Power Stage in Calvi produced a final twist! Elfyn Evans, the leader before the final 19 kilometres, punctured gifting victory to Thierry Neuville. It was the Belgian’s first win in 2019 and it´s put him in the lead in the World Rally Campionship. Sébastien Ogier managed to salvage his weekend with a miraculous second place in front of the unlucky Evans. Dani Sordo and Teemu Suninen completed the top 5, while Northern Irish driver Kris Meeke, ninth overall, won the Power Stage.

Sunday 31st March
SS14 (Calvi)
Distance: 19,34 km
Weather: Sunny
Road conditions: Dry

#10. JARI-MATTI LATVALA & MIKKA ANTTILA
“You can set a good time here by taking risks. I’d just be happy to have scored one or two points in this event. I missed out on something this weekend. I need to recharge my batteries for Argentina.”

#5. KRIS MEEKE & SEBASTIAN MARSHALL
“The stage went off pretty well. We’ll have to see what the guys behind will do. I nursed my tyres in the previous special to stack all the odds in my favour to score points here. I hope it’ll pay off.”

#19. SÉBASTIEN LOEB & DANIEL ELENA
“We got through it. We didn’t run in this one as we weren’t chasing points, we just wanted to finish. Even if it was frustrating to be effectively out of the running in the first stage, we enjoyed this beautiful rally in this car.”

#4. ESAPEKKA LAPPI & JANNE FERM
“We’re going to learn lessons from this weekend. It was really difficult although we tried to do our best. It’ll be better next time.”

#8. OTT TÄNAK & MARTIN JÄRVEOJA
“In the end it’s obvious that we’re disappointed; we were battling for victory, but I’ve never had much luck in this rally. However, we scored a few points and we’re still in contact with the championship leaders.”

#3. TEEMU SUNINEN & MARKO SALMINEN
“I’m really happy with my pace and the car’s performance this weekend. You had to watch out in this stage; the road was starting to break up.”

#6. DANI SORDO & CARLOS DEL BARRIO
“It wasn’t a perfect rally, but we’ve finished with a good haul of points for the team so it’s not too bad.”

#1. SÉBASTIEN OGIER & JULIEN INGRASSIA
“Yes, the result doesn’t live up to our expectations, but even so finishing on the podium is a good thing. Although we weren’t all that quick we scored big points for the championship.”

#11. THIERRY NEUVILLE & NICOLAS GILSOUL
“I gave everything but the times weren’t great. It’s been a good weekend and the team’s done a fantastic job.”
Another reaction from Thierry Neuville after Elfyn Evans’s puncture:
“The whole team’s over the moon as they’ve done an incredible amount of work this weekend. However, we still have to improve on asphalt.”

#33. ELFYN EVANS & SCOTT MARTIN
Puncture on the right-hand front tyre. No comment.

#28. NIKOLAY GRYAZIN & YAROSLAV FEDOROV :
“We didn’t want to overheat the tyres. I had to nurse them. We’re waiting for Andolfi’s time to see if we’ve won.”

#22. LUKASZ PIENIAZEK & KAMIL HELLER
“We’re going to finish this rally and we’ve scored the maximum number of points in WRC2 PRO. We’re going to work to improve in view of our next event.”
