Sébastien Ogier leads from start to finish!

The first leg of the Che Guevara Energy Drink Tour de Corse finished today, Friday 30th September, on the Place Saint-Nicolas in Bastia after a standout performance by Sébastien Ogier.

Summary: Friday 30th September

Sébastien Ogier put on a really dominant performance in the first leg of the Che Guevara Energy Drink Tour de Corse. Even if the French driver had the advantage of being first on the road due to his position as leader in the World Rally Championship overall classification, he was also the prey his rivals wanted to hunt down. The latter, though, had little opportunity to take the fight to the reigning three-time World Rally Champion. Right from the first stage in the morning, Ogier took the lead in the event by setting the fastest time and he repeated this performance once, twice, three times showing his pursuers no mercy in the four timed stages of the day. Behind the Volkswagen Motorsport ace the other drivers had to make do with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table, metaphorically speaking! Kris Meeke was a regular top-5 contender but lost time in stage 3 because of a puncture. Dani Sordo also shone on several occasions until losing several seconds in the final stage. The main winners in the first leg were obviously Ogier, and also Thierry Neuville and Jari-Matti Latvala who filled the first three places in the overall general classification as was the case for most of the day. Andreas Mikkelsen and Craig Breen are waiting in ambush in the top five. Among the other French runners, Éric Camilli saw the flag in seventh place as he gradually upped the pace throughout the 157.68 timed kilometres, while Bryan Bouffier stood out in WRC2.

Programme Saturday 1st October:

SS5-7 La Porta-Valle di Rostino (53,72 km): First car at 09:22-15:20

2016 Tour de Corse Director David Serieys’ analysis:

“One myth chases another with this stage that was so important in the glorious era of the Tour de Corse. This special has two new sections: from kilometre 0,00 to kilometre 29,21, then from kilometre 49,73 to kilometre 53,72. The start will be given in Pont de Rimitorio and the crews will tackle a very technical uphill section towards the La Porta church, the most emblematic monument of Castagniccia; they will continue along a very narrow twisty, degraded road that goes through the Giocatojo village and then crosses the Saint-Antoine pass, one of the highest points of the rally. A downhill section alternating new and old surfaces and quick and winding sections will bring the crews to Ortiporio, Penta Acquatella, Barchetta and its spectacular hairpin. They will arrive in Campile after a radical change of surface and a hill climb-like section. A much twister road on the mountainside will take them to Bisinchi and Castello di Rostino. Then comes the final portion with a succession of downhill hairpins followed by the finish not far from the Valle di Rostino.”

SS6-8 Novella-Pietralba (30,80 km): First car at 11:03-17:01

2016 Tour de Corse Director David Serieys’ analysis:

“The crews will start near the Pietra Monetta auberge on a very twisty road in the middle of the maquis with several difficult corners as they race up to the Novella village perched on a mountain. Their passages through the Gare de Novella and the La Croix pass will give the spectators a unique view on la Balagne and on the first part of this stage. A much windier narrow road with a worn surface will lead them to the old territorial road. They will then tackle a succession of quick, twisty sections in a dream setting followed by a much narrower and bumpy road to reach the finish in Pietralba.”
